The impact of AI on the music industry is a topic of debate. While some express concerns about AI disrupting creativity, others remain skeptical. Here are a few perspectives:
Generative AI and Novelty: Generative AI can create music, but its creative output remains a point of contention. For instance, imagine Frank Sinatra rapping a Notorious B.I.G. track or Beyoncรฉ singing a D’Angelo song. While the results might be interesting, the question is how often people would listen to such novelty creations.
Even if these AI-generated songs went viral on platforms like TikTok, they might eventually become annoying, akin to the mid-2000s trend of ringtones. Legally, replicating someone’s voice or music without permission and compensation (except in parody) is not acceptable.
Positive Uses of AI in Music: AI has already been used for good in the music world. For example, a combination of AI and a sound-alike singer helped country artist Randy Travis regain his voice after a stroke.
Rather than replacing musicians, AI could become essential for understanding and leveraging music in the industry.
In summary, while AI presents challenges, it also offers opportunities for innovation and collaboration within the music industry.
