Is There Money in Kindle Kids' Books? Let's compare publishing options

Writing children’s books can be a rewarding venture, but it’s essential to set realistic expectations. Let’s explore the financial aspects:

The publishing agent route.
Advances: First-time authors typically receive an advance from the publisher. For picture books (which average around 32 pages), this advance can range from $6,000 to $12,000. Keep in mind that this amount is split between the author and the illustrator (if separate). Easy readers and novels follow similar compensation packages.

Royalties: After earning out the advance (i.e., selling enough copies), authors receive royalties. These are usually around 3.5% to 6% of the book’s sale price. Novels have a different structure, with no royalty split. Most picture books sell 5,000 to 10,000 copies in hardcover form, and few make it to paperback. Additionally, many books go out of print within about two years.

Big Names vs. Reality: While authors like Jeff Kinney (creator of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”) and J.K. Rowling have made millions, most writers don’t achieve such success. Writing children’s books is rarely a full-time job for the majority of authors.

While children’s books can be creatively fulfilling, financial gains vary widely. It’s essential to love what you do and recognize that monetary rewards may not match those of blockbuster authors

Here are seven tips to help aspiring children’s book authors:

Find an Inspiring Idea: Start with a compelling concept that excites you. Whether it’s a whimsical adventure, a heartwarming friendship, or a magical world, let your imagination soar!

Know Your Audience: Understand the age group you’re targeting. Picture books, middle-grade novels, and young adult fiction each have distinct characteristics. Tailor your writing accordingly.

Create a Relatable Protagonist: Develop a main character that young readers can connect with. Make them relatable, flawed, and memorable.

Ask Questions: As you write, consider the “what ifs.” What if your character faced a challenge? What if they discovered a hidden secret? Curiosity fuels creativity!

Read Recent Children’s Fiction: Immerse yourself in the genre. Observe storytelling techniques, character development, and pacing. Learn from successful authors.

Read Aloud: Hearing your story helps you catch awkward sentences, pacing issues, and dialogue quirks. Plus, it’s fun!

Finish Your Story: Persevere! Completing your manuscript is a significant achievement. Celebrate each step, from the first draft to the final polish.

Traditional Publishing: Advances: For picture books (averaging 32 pages), first-time authors typically receive an advance from the publisher. This advance can range from $6,000 to $12,000.
Keep in mind that this amount is split between the author and the illustrator (if separate).

Royalties: After earning out the advance (i.e., selling enough copies), authors receive royalties. These are often around 3.5% to 6% of the book’s sale price. Most picture books sell around 5,000 to 10,000 copies in hardcover form, with few making it to paperback.
Easy readers and novels follow similar compensation packages.

Self-Publishing on Kindle: Children’s Literature: Among all writing categories, children’s literature—especially illustrated children’s books—is lucrative and accessible for beginners.

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP): Self-publishing on Amazon Kindle is straightforward. Authors can earn through:

Kindle Unlimited Page Reads: Payment when readers pass 10% of your book.
Countdown Deals: Limited-time promotions on your ebook.
Free Book Promotions: Schedule free days to boost visibility and downloads

To self-publish a children’s book on Kindle, follow these steps:

Create the eBook Version: Use the Kindle Kids’ Book Creator tool to import illustrations, add pop-ups, and preview your illustrated kids’ book.

For chapter books, you can use Kindle Create instead.

Set Up Your eBook on KDP: Use KDP eBook set-up to publish your Kindle eBook. This involves formatting your manuscript, setting the price, and choosing distribution options.

Prepare Your Book for Print (Optional): If you want to offer a print version, prepare your book for print using KDP Print.
Ensure your illustrations are high-resolution and meet print quality standards.

Remember, Amazon’s powerful marketing tools and global distribution can help you reach millions of readers. Good luck with your children’s book!
